We’ve got all the essential info on why you might need a new plate, how you get one and what you’ll need to do to get one for a lease car.

Why Would You Need a New Number Plate?

There are a few reasons why you might need to get a new number plate made up and these include:

  • An existing number plate being damaged or lost and needs replacing
  • You’ve purchased a personalised registration number
  • You are adding a bike rack which obscures the plate on the vehicle and so need an additional one
  • You are going to tow a caravan or trailer and need a plate for it

What You Need to Get a New Number Plate

In order to get a new number plate made you will need to take three types of documentation:

  • Proof of your identity
  • Proof you are authorised to use the vehicle (ownership / funder authorisation)
  • Proof of the registration

For your proof of identity, you will need to show a document with your name and address on it so a driving licence or recent utility bill or bank statement.

For the vehicle you’ll need a copy of the V5 and if you do not own the car a letter of authorisation. The V5 will confirm the registration number as well.

Where Can I Get a New Number Plate Made?

All new number plates must be made by a registered plate supplier for them to be legally road-worthy.

You can find your local supplier on the government’s website.

Getting a New Number Plate for a Leased Car

When you lease a vehicle you are not the registered owner or keeper and so will not have the V5, this will be held by your lease funder. So, in order to get a new number plate you will need to contact your lease provider and request a copy of the V5. They will need to know why you are requesting a copy and you’ll simply need to let them know the reason and they can then provide you with a copy of the V5 and a letter of authorisation for you to have the additional plate made.

Please note that when they provide the copy there will be details blacked out to prevent vehicle theft and fraud but this will still be accepted by the plate suppliers.
